Breaking the cycle of violence, poverty and risk to vulnerable women and their children

El contexto
In the Bronx, rampant poverty and barriers to accessing support services prevent mothers from creating better futures for their children. Family violence and toxic stress may be passed from parents to children, creating new generations of affected children whose wellness and economic opportunities are compromised.
A major factor affecting early childhood development is maternal well-being. It is therefore imperative to provide positive opportunities and integrated support services for mothers and young children.
El proyecto
Healthy Steps at Montefiore attempts to break the cycle of violence and risk to vulnerable women and their children, improving the security and well-being of families predominantly led by single mothers with histories of abuse and mental health issues. It leverages the non-stigmatized setting of pediatric primary care to identify families at risk, providing on-site mental health services and referrals to help women access a range of health and social services.
Fondation Chanel is working with Healthy Steps at Montefiore to significantly increase the number of underserved women and children receiving screening, mental health resources and linkages to social services at each of its 20 pediatric primary care sites. Efforts to improve the operating capacity of the program, its efficiency and performance will support the expansion of the Healthy Steps model in New York and nationally. The partnership is also working to increase recognition of the cost-benefit of preventive services for vulnerable mothers and children.
