The context

In certain disadvantaged neighborhoods in France, the unemployment rate surpasses twice the national average. Girls in these neighborhoods are particularly disadvantaged with regards to acquiring and exercising their professional skills. Sports can be an effective means of building confidence and social skills, yet many girls may not feel comfortable playing sports in gender-mixed settings.

 
 

The project

To promote the presence of girls in sports, Sport dans la Ville has implemented the program “L Dans la Ville” that accompanies girls in their personal development and their employability. After strong growth in the Rhone Alpes region, the association has expanded in the Ile de France region in 2012 with the opening of several project sites in Seine-Saint-Denis, Val d’Oise and Paris.

 
 

The support

Fondation CHANEL supported the implementation of the project “L ┬áDans la Ville” in the Ile-de-France region. Girls from disadvantaged neighborhoods developed their academic, social and professional skills through sports, cultural trips and company visits. A mentoring program involving 13 Chanel employees helped as many girls to develop specific professional skills. The company also held a number of workshops for the girls to discover different careers in business, science, and the arts.

The results

  • A total of 6 new centers “L Dans L Ville” were opened in Ile de France.
  • 220 girls are benefiting from the project, 50% through dance activities and 50% through sports.
  • A project manager was hired to provide coaching and mix of educators has been strengthened.

The 2014-2015 “Job in the City” induction program alumni counted 42 girls. Two of them have been hired for internships at Chanel headquarters in Neuilly.
