Protect and provide emergency relief and psychosocial support to women affected by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti
On October 4, 2016, Haiti was hit by a devastating hurricane. Over 500 people were killed and thousands were displaced. Infrastructure, homes, and crops were destroyed in many communities. Displaced residents were forced to take refuge in temporary shelters, where they lack access to basic necessities and face an increased risk of exposure to diseases and gender-based violence.
When disaster strikes, women and children are among the most vulnerable. As such, ACTED has been working to provide gender-sensitive emergency relief services to women and girls affected by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. ACTED’s field teams participate in distributing urgently needed items (including food, hygiene kits, tarps and blankets, water filters), reconstruction efforts, and work to protect vulnerable families from abuse, neglect, and violence.
Fondation CHANEL partnered with ACTED to develop a gender-sensitive response to the disaster in Haiti. As such, ACTED has expanded its operations to reach very vulnerable women in the Southern part of the island, who were not included in initial international relief programs. Furthermore, ACTED is working to raise awareness to prevent gender-based violence and to protect and support women who have been victims of violence.
- 500 vulnerable families (approximatively 3000 persons) received emergency shelter kits, which include tarps, a solar lamp, and fixation kits for the shelter.
- 20,000 women and girls affected by the hurricane gain access to psychosocial support
- 20 community health workers receive training in gender-sensitive disaster management
- 7,000 people reached through awareness raising activities to prevent teenage pregnancies and gender-based violence
Since 1993, as an international NGO, ACTED has been committed to immediate humanitarian relief to support those in urgent need and protect people’s dignity, while co-creating longer-term opportunities for sustainable growth and fulfilling people’s potential. ACTED has been supporting vulnerable communities in Haiti since 2004.
