Some women from Butuo in the Sichuan region on their way to a training on nutrition.
Bu Tuo is a very isolated mountainous Sichuan county with a total population of 140,000 people mostly belonging to the highly marginalized Yi ethnic group. Over 20% of the population is classified as “extremely poor”, with an annual per capita income of less than €60.
The population suffers from poor nutrition and hygiene conditions and poor health.
FXB International promotes the professional integration of women through the creation of income generating activities in areas such as horticulture, agriculture or handicrafts. The association promoted a holistic approach including targeted activities to improve health, education, housing, and nutrition.
Fondation CHANEL has supported this project by developing the skills of 80 vulnerable women, most of whom are illiterate, widowed, with dependent children. FXB International improved their economic resources and personal and social skills. Training and discussion groups have also attracted the sharing of experience between them.
- All women in the project developed an income generating activity and 92% of participants manage to save regularly.
- All families are now able to have three meals a day and a more balanced diet thanks to the vegetable gardens established during the project.
- Household sanitation was improved and their children’s school enrollment rate increased from 20 to 76%.
- Group activities introduced by FXB in the field fostered a spirit of mutual aid between the participants.
Founded in 1989, FXB International aims to get families out of extreme poverty by supporting a sustainable path to economic independence. The strength of the organization lies in its integrated approach and the personal support of the participants.
