Promoting women in the Arts
Women in the Arts
For countless years, 20th century female artists suffered from a lack of visibility and struggled to gain recognition for their work. For many, this is still the case today.
Less exhibited, less published, their art less purchased or at a lesser price… female artists were stuck in a vicious circle of obscurity. Information and visibility are essential factors when it comes to increasing awareness of the work of artists.
The support provided to AWARE seeks to make people more knowledgeable of 20th and 21st century women artists and their creations, by encouraging research, studies and meetings on all related topics, and to promote the visibility of women artists through various means, media and actions.
Fondation CHANEL supports and accompanies AWARE in France and internationally. The Foundation is a founding donor of the organisation and is involved in a long term support to promote its mission to increase the visibility of women artists in the world.
- Running the website and increasing the number of artists featured from 8045 to 150
- Creation of the AWARE Prize for women artists
- Inauguration and development of the AWARE (Lab) a study and research centre in Paris for women artists.
AWARE, Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions, is a public interest association whose purpose is to showcase the work of women artists, give them back the place they deserve in the history of art, and ensure 20th and 21st century women artists enjoy ultimate visibility by using various means, media and actions.
