#MuseumWeek2017:  put women in the spotlight!

The “First worldwide cultural event on social networks” is committed to gender equality, and the cross-cutting theme for 2017 is Women in the Arts.

What is MuseumWeek?

Held from 19 – 25 June, #MuseumWeek is an international online event celebrating and showcasing all things from cultural institutions over 7 days, 7 themes, 7 hashtags! It will provide an opportunity for them to share and discuss their special passions with the public on social networks, using hashtags dedicated to the event (eg. #FoodMW, #SportsMW, #MusicMW, #StoriesMW, #BooksMW, #TravelsMW, #HeritageMW)

This year, every day of the event, the hashtag #WomenMW will allow participants to think about the role of women in the Arts.

Why a tribute to women?

Women are much less visible in the Arts than one might think. At the beginning of the 20th century, a group of women artists reported that “less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art Sections [of the MET] are women, but 85% of the nudes are female”. And today, among the 500 best-selling artists in the world, only 19 are women…

For the NGO Aware, it is clear that “Women artists are under-represented, if not completely absent, in art books, exhibitions and museum collections”.

So, with #MuseumWeek from June 19th to June 25th, and more generally all year long, let’s ask ourselves about our own artistic practices and work to promote women in the Arts!
